In 1874, the cities west of the Bronx became part of New York City, and the land east of it was annexed in 1898. The Bronx Zoo, a major institution founded in 1900, is home to the largest zoo in the United States and the largest natural history museum in the world.

Although the Bronx is connected to mainland America by the borough, the small island is only accessible via a bridge that blends into the larger Bronx on the edge of Pelham Park.
